I've always read a lot; from the problematic fave Famous Five books of my childhood to darker kids books like Animorphs and R.L.Stine's Goosebumps. I was the kid who stayed indoors and read at weekends, staying up well into the night with a carboot sale copy of a James Herbert horror.
Nowadays I read a lot of new release fiction so I'm up to date and ready with recommendations when asked. If you describe anything to me using the now popular keyword "unhinged women", I'll probably buy it. I like a good psychological horror/crime novel, and stuff that's grounded in realistic relationships and reality. Do not give me a dream sequence and let me determine whether it's really happening, I hate it!
As well as devouring all the books, I have a terrible memory. I feel embarrassed by my inability to recall anything about a book I read last month other than "I loved it!". My poor memory makes me feel disingenuous when talking up a novel. So hopefully this website will serve as a way for me to jog my memory, and if not.. hey, I'll give customers a business card and tell 'em to see for themselves.
My favourite book is Hunger by Knut Hamsun. My favourite bookshop is the one I work at, dummy. My favourite place to read is on the bus. A forty minute bus journey - with white noise playing in my earphones to blot out the other commuters? Heaven.
